Three New Sports and Water Destinations Near Cadence

The East Valley has a lot to look forward to with the construction of several new sports and water destinations, all near Cadence at Gateway. These new facilities are expected to create many new employment opportunities and attract millions of visitors annually, once they open in the coming years – likely all attractions will be operational in 2022.

Planners say the East Valley area around Cadence and Mesa Gateway Airport offers incredible accessibility to the freeway and other major thoroughfares, the area’s growing family population, and strong participation in youth and adult sports.

Sports facilities, wave lagoons, dining, concert venues, apparel shops–we’re excited to see what’s in store!

Legacy Park

Legacy Sports Park, a facility of more than 300 acres, is scheduled to open in January 2022. This sports and entertainment complex at Ellsworth and Pecos roads next to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will offer more than 100 courts for sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball and baseball, plus areas for other activities and events. There’s an 8,000-seat multipurpose stadium, a 20,000-square-foot sports bar and restaurant, a youth gym and childcare center. The sports performance center will be directed by former Olympian Dan O’Brien.

The philosophy of Legacy Cares, Inc., is to provide athletes and non-athletes of all ages, economic backgrounds and levels of athletic proficiency, the opportunity to participate in sports while fostering the enjoyment and camaraderie of teamwork and perseverance, key components in athletic competition and lifetime success. Chad Miller, CEO and president of Legacy Sports USA, said in a statement, “A facility such as this is long overdue in the Arizona market.”

Canon Beach

Canon Beach, a proposed project located a mile northwest of Mesa Gateway Airport at Power and Williams Field roads, will feature a wave lagoon as the centerpiece and include 475,000 square feet of commercial space, a gym, a climbing wall, a go-cart track, a 65-foot tall hotel and retail space.

The facility is designed to provide a beach ambiance transplanted from Southern California to the Sonoran Desert, catered partly toward the transplanted California population. It would cover nearly 60 acres, but the south 20 acres are merely conceptual, with more details to come later.

A new technology that produces a guaranteed wave is fueling a boom in surf parks around the country.

At this point, Cannon Beach seeks zoning approvals, after debuting and winning unanimous recommendations for approval at a recent Mesa Planning and Zoning Board meeting. The project will go before the City Council next for consideration of the necessary zoning changes.

Mesa City Councilwoman Jen Duff, said in a recent East Valley Tribune article, “There’s a lot of businesses down there near the airport and a lot of homes. There’s not really a lot of attractions. It could be a plus to the area.”

The Strand at Gilbert Regional Park

When fully built, Gilbert Regional Park, located just west of Higley Road and south of Queen Creek Road in Gilbert, will feature 272 acres of fun and entertainment, including The Strand, Gilbert’s first water park, expected to open in 2022. The first phase of the park is open, which includes a 17-foot iconic playground (The Mountain), a splash pad with 57 different water features (The Falls) and a tot playground for the park’s smallest visitors (The Creek).

Expected to open in 2022, The Strand at Gilbert,” is the 25-acre skills-based water park that will be part of Gilbert Regional Park and include a surf lagoon, a cable wake park, inflatable aqua course, sand beach and a kids’ play area. The water park’s amenities include three lagoons for cable-based wakeboarding and skiing, surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and a floating obstacle course, as well as restaurants, a beach, a swimming area, and a retail store.

John McLaughlin, CEO of Strand Resorts, told ABC15 in a recent interview, “Mostly it’s a place for the community. It’s a community asset; it’s for the residents of Gilbert and the surrounding areas,” he said.
